Because lives of faith are lived out, for the most part, in the public sphere, faith and politics have been intersecting for centuries. Sometimes, this intersection is worked out in the public celebration of a saint, or in the way economics surrounds pilgrimages to a holy site.  Frequently, an exploration of faith and politics is an exploration of conflict between groups or tension between political expediency and religious ideals.
