I think it is a powerful, balanced and fair statement. Also quite challenging.

It is a huge mistake to set up another hurdle, as the first respondent proposes. If any outside party or combination of parties are able to help the parties come together, that will be quite sufficient. The Obama Administration's idea of building on the Arab Peace Plan while not stopping there is a brilliant approach.

I am actively working to build grassroots support for a just peace with security.

I share your aspirations. But I've started thinking of the Israeli/Palestinian issue in a new way since the latest round of violence. I've come to believe that Muslim resentment against the West (which has a great deal of justification) has become embodied by the plight of the Palestinians, and that no peace that is sponsered by the leading western power (the US) can succeed. I also do not believe that some rushed settlement will be stable but instead will only feed extremism on both sides. I now believe that a comprehensive, long-term and legitimate (as seen from both the prespective of the West, Israel and Islamic countries) effort is needed. I would like to see President Obama begin to build an intenational consensus (non-Western and probably beginning with China) on international mechanisms and procedures for dealing with the issue. If such a process can be started and begin to build momentum it will have far-reaching and immediate benefits and is the logical place to start in any real rapprochement between the West and Islam.
