The Explorations into Faiths (EIF) Programme started in Singapore in July2007 with the training of 13 volunteer community interfaith volunteers. The second such course was organised in June 2008. Since then, over 680 participants, youth mostly aged 17-35yrs, have taken part in regular monthly interfaith dialogues hosted by local Mosques, Catholic Churches, Buddhist and Taoist Temples, Sikh Gudwara and Baha’i homes. Annual interfaith youth camps and forums have been organised as well as the 1st Interfaith Conference for Practitioners, Educators and Advocates in Nov 2008. Prof Abu Nimer from the American University was invited to run a developmental workshop in Dec 2008 for the community interfaith dialogue facilitators. An interfaith service project is being organised in Sep 2009. The volunteers presented at the 2nd INternational Conference on Character Development through Experiential and Service Learning (www.servicelearning.nie.edu.sg). EIF is sponsored by Grants from the Southeast Community Development Council of SIngapore (www.southeastcdc.org.sg).

As a secular, public university the administration struggled for a dozen years with how to support student’s spiritual journeys without privileging one religion over another. The result is the Multi-Faith Centre where students, staff, and faculty have opportunities to pursue both their own interests as well as gain a greater understanding and mutual respect for people of all faiths or none. In the end the University is committed to developing life long scholars, who can make ehtical decisions as global citizens in a multi-faith society.
