I have to disagree with Mr Kamel, the jews and Christians were indeed treated with the same treatment as the muslims. I believe that the only conflict was a theological one and though all religions practiced their religion freely it remained, and consciously to all citizens, the aspect that separated them.

Christians and Jews lived within their own religious laws, for marriage, for celebrations for social disputes, Islam allowed this, however it can not be ignored that Muslims were the governing owners of the land and had to instill a set of grounded rule that allowed the Jews and Christians to accept them. We see throughout history the Christians never gave real credit to Muslim scholars or rulers it is only within these few years that historians have looked into certain historical events. Hence, we are all equals, if Christianity was the ruler what type of power would it have used to maintain force?? If equality is not always observed, which was rarely, was to maintain rule and Spain I agree is a model society.

I just want to tell you that I used your essay as a source for a research paper that I had to write in my ninth grade world studies class about Al-Andalus. I took a different approach and looked at the positive and negative aspects of the society. Let's face it, although al-andalus was extremely tolerant the muslims did not treat jews and christians as equals. If this was because of the koran or just their way of living, i do not know, but i do believe we should look back at muslim spain as a model society.

It is inspiring to reflect on such a beautiful model of harmony in a multi-religious society in the MIDDLE AGES. Knowing what we do about Al-Andalus during the reign of the Moors, our AGE is strongly challenged to be more innovative to come up with better praxis of harmony in our religious pluralist societies. If the Moors in Medieval times could do it, my belief in the dynamism in human nature convinces me that we of our age can top their achievement, if we earnestly work on ourselves.
