"Never before, and never since, have I experienced disdain of this sort" -- dress as an Orthodox Jew and walk through many of the predominantly Muslim areas of London and you'll have a fit of nostalgia.

Mr Stanton's arguments are indeed valid. If you want to apply this to a Jewish situation in France - read up in public space in France and the laicite movement that arose out of the French revolution and which has specific roles for religion in France. Also Napoleon's questions to the Jewish elders. And the role 'Jewishness' played in the Dreyfus affair. Europe has now a "Muslim Question' and the restrictions applied to Muslims are reminiscent of those placed on Jews after the development of centralized nation-states.

It's a much deeper 'French' issue than appears. Mr. Staunton's comments are definitely worthwhile although the fundamental dilemma with regards to France is the differences between French and American models of secularism and the role of religion in society.

Mr. Stanton's arguments may or may not be valid, but it is unfortunate that (as a future rabbi) he didn't consider wearing a yarmulka publicly in Paris. Then he could be writing about how people would have treated him as a Jew rather than as a suspected Muslim.
